Meet the Therapist
A little bit about me
Hello!
My name is Steffie Myall (she/her), and I’m an Integrative Counsellor, and accredited member of The National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society (NCPS). My qualifications include a Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling, and further specialist CPD/ experience in working with schools (parents/ carers/ education staff), neurodiversity; LGBTQ+ issues and relationship diversity. I work with children, adolescents and adults.
Steffie Myall; Dip. Couns.
My Background
My background is in Primary Education (BA Hons), with thirteen years worth of experience in teaching, private tutoring, and consulting in order to raise Early Years standards across Essex. During my time in this career, it became increasingly clear to me that there was a real mental health need in children, parents and families that wasn’t being addressed. I felt frustrated that I wasn’t afforded the time to support others in these needs, within the constraints of a fast-paced teaching schedule. During this time, I sat with many children and adults alike, who would naturally want to share their personal experiences, stories (and often, tears) with me, and I realised that this was the work I so passionately wanted to do.
I decided to embark on an initial counselling course to learn more about myself and how to support others with their mental health…and four years of intense training later, I emerged with the qualifications and experience needed to finally be able to sit with others in their pain, progress, joy (and everything in between)!
My Present
I feel privileged to now be able to make therapeutic connections with a wide range of clients. I currently split my time between working in local secondary schools, offering 1-1 sessions with students and running group therapy sessions, working as a counselling team member for South Essex Extended Services, and working in Private Practice from home, primarily with adult clients.
My Style
My therapeutic style is warm, empathic and non-judgemental. I aim to create a safe, confidential and open-minded environment in which you feel comfortable to talk about anything that you are struggling with, or needing to explore. The therapeutic relationship between us is essential for this process to be effective. This means that I work from the philosophy that trust, empathy, boundaries and acceptance are cornerstones of our work together. I am not, and never will be an expert on you; only you can take that role. Consider yourself the driver in this process, and me as an active passenger: my job is to be open to your pathway; to ‘see the wood for the trees’ when you feel lost; and to facilitate a way forward that is right for you.
As an integrative ‘talk’ therapist, this means that I tailor the therapy to your individual needs, and do not work from a singular model. My work is underpinned by Person-Centred Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and elements of Psychodynamic theory, alongside a wide range of other creative approaches such as music, play, stone and art therapy. Most importantly, counselling will work at your pace, and be in service of you at all times.
